Per a recent Security Advisor, Cisco has warned that Mac OS7-9, Solaris, and Linux version of the VPN 5000 client contain security vulnerabilities.
All users of MAC OS7-9, Solaris, and Linux should immediately upgrade their client software with the versions here.
This page allows Rice University users to download the Cisco VPN 5000 client code for MacOS (7.6-9.2), Windows (9x, NT, 2K, ME), Solaris (Intel, Sparc), and Linux. The Cisco VPN 5000 client code is licensed software obtained from Cisco Systems as part of our purchase of the VPN concentrator. You may use it with the Rice VPN while you are employed at Rice or are a student. You must accept the license agreement to complete software installation.
After feedback from the trial group, we now distribute the DES version of the Cisco VPN 5000 client code instead of the 3DES ("triple-DES") version we distributed initially. Reasons for the change were improvement in performance and elimination of any export control issues for foreign travellers. If you installed the 3DES versions, you are encouraged to upgrade all prior installations to the current versions accessible through this page.
Before installing or upgrading, please read the appropriate release notes for the version you intend to use (e.g., Mac, Windows, Solaris, Linux). Some clients, for example the Windows 2000 client, have special installation requirements.
IMPORTANT - the four most frequent difficulties our users have had installing and using VPN software, with their solutions, are documented here. Please double-check that none of these solutions apply to your situation if you have difficulties.
MacOS X Users Cisco will not provide a "DES" version of the VPN 5000 Client. If you require VPN capability, you have two options: (1) You may download the file listed below for MacOS 7.6-9.2 and install and run it in Classic mode. This has been tested and verified to work under MacOS X 10.1 and MacOS 9.2.1. (2) Cisco is currently distributing a "3-DES" version of a native MacOS X Cisco VPN 5000 Client for MacOS X release 10.1. Unfortunately, because of U.S. Government controls on 3-DES, we cannot distribute it through this web page. If you have immediate need for native VPN functionality for MacOS X release 10.1, please submit a problem and we arrange to get you the "3-DES" version. Because it contains technology restricted by the U.S. Government, you will be responsible for complying with the U.S. Government regulations.
VPN 5000 Series End of Sales
Cisco has announced the end of sales of the VPN 5000 Series to focus
its VPN offerings on the VPN 3000 Series product. We are examining our
options which includes a no-cost swap of the VPN 5001 concentrators that
we own for VPN 3030 concentrators. The existing client and concentrator
software remains available and will receive bug fixes but no enhancement.
More informaton will be posted here and elsewhere as it becomes available.
Old versions of the Cisco VPN 5000 Client will be kept here.
