CAVY-L

A Mailing List for Fanciers of Cavies

Introduction

The CAVY-L mailing list is for owners of pet cavies, also called guinea pigs. The cavy is a small furry creature closely related to rodents, originating from South America. The CAVY-L list invites all cavy lovers to join and talk about nutrition, veterinary care, breeding, behavior, shows, or other issues related to pet cavies.

Rules and Charter

The rules of CAVY-L are simple, and based upon sensible rules of conduct.

  1. Messages must contain non-trivial content related to cavies. Before sending e-mail to CAVY-L, you should ask yourself whether you are contributing to the conversation, or replying directly to another CAVY-L user on matters that are not likely to interest other list members. If the latter, you should instead send e-mail directly to them instead of the list. If you reply to a message, you should only include or quote that part of the original message which is relevant. Posting a message without cavy-related content or with excessive quoted text will result in up to 3 warnings, after which you will be unsubscribed from the list.
  2. Messages containing foul or abusive language, racial slurs, religious content not related to cavies, or other impolite behavior will result in a warning. Ignoring that warning will result in unsubscription from the list. Questions about what kind of language is appropriate may be sent to the list owner, rickr@rice.edu. Keep in mind that guinea pigs are pets frequently enjoyed by young children, and there may be many children reading CAVY-L mail.
  3. Messages advertising commercial goods or services related to cavies may be posted no more than once per month. Messages advertising commercial goods or services unrelated to guinea pigs are not acceptable. Breaking this rule will result in one warning, followed by unsubscription from the list if the warning is not heeded.
  4. Messages containing styled text, HTML code or attached files are acceptable, but subject to two conditions. First, the message must include a plain-text version of the HTML or styled text, included at the the top of the message. Second, the message must not exceed 100 kilobytes in overall size, including headers, body text and attachment(s). Breaking this rule will result in one warning, then unsubscription from the list if the warning is not heeded.
  5. If you prefer not to write English, please include a descriptive subject line indicating what language is being used, such as:
    Espan~ol: !Mi cavy es loco!
Breaking this rule will result in a warning, but not ejection from the list.
  6. Any personal complaints or objections to the management of the list should be sent to the list owner, rickr@rice.edu. Such messages will be kept confidential until the issue is resolved to the satisfaction of all involved.
  7. Please be aware of the recommendations of the Child Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA). In particular: Children age 13 or under should not give personal information (address, telephone number) to any other person on the list without parents' permission. In addition, adults on the list should not solicit personal information from children. Although the maintainers of CAVY-L are not in a position to check the ages of participants, any suspected violation of COPPA will result in immediate warnings from the moderator, followed by unsubscription if the violations are found to be legitimate.

Other Cavy-related Mailing Lists & Groups

There are at least four other e-mail resources available for pet cavy owners, and two newsgroups.

The Guinea Pigs Daily Digest

Carlo Ferrari manages this indispensible resource for communication about guinea pigs. Although I like the GPDD, I find the digest format to be somewhat intractable and unfortunately delivery of the digest tends to be somewhat sporadic.

guinea-pigs

The guinea-pigs list is intended as a direct back-channel to the GPDD, for users who need quick information. It's designed to be less chatty than the GPDD, for quick information and assistance particularly on difficult health topics. Keep in mind that the moderator, Sandi Ackerman, has very strict rules on what topics are permitted. Please heed those rules if you join this list.

Newsgroup: alt.pets.guinea-pigs

The newsgroup is useful, although traffic is sporadic. It occasionally gets spammed by people who are trying to irritate the regular newsgroup readers. Your web browser must be configured for news reading to use the link above.

Newsgroup: rec.pets

Like most of the mainstream newsgroups, it's a haven for spammers & trolls and all sorts of irritating people. But if you can work your way around those problems, it's not a bad group at all. Again, your web browser must be correctly configured for news to use the link above.
